MacArthur vs Truman
Douglas MacArthur was a five star general of American armies during both World War One and World War Two. He was considered a hero at home and was soon appointed to supreme Allied commander. He sometimes met with the president to advise on military matters. He was one of the men who helped devise the strategy of island hopping. However, MacArthur was strong willed and very arrogant and didn't agree with Truman’s strategies of fighting in South Korea. He began to publicly speak out against Truman and his ideas even though Truman had told Generals to keep their opinions to themselves.
MacArthur wanted to expand the war into China and was not afraid to share his feelings about this. MacArthur wrote a letter to a republican house member telling him why they should expand the war, knowing he would leak the letter to the press. For Truman this was the last straw and he fired MacArthur. Many people were angry because he was a hero at home but Truman held firm and even wrote a speech to justify things for the people.
